The road running side by side to the tunisian border from north to south gets very picturesque after passing Nalut because of the presence of many small sandy dunes which sometimes completely invade the road making difficult for an unequipped vehicle to go on. The ancient town is extremely fascinating and the main road turns up to be as a cool tunnel crossing the town under the houses sheltered from the outer heat that in summer can easily reach 50°C in the shade! Little by little Ghadames is falling in a deep lethal sleep: the buildings are abandoned and only during the hottest hours of the day it is still possible to see few old people dozed off on the cool stone benches.
